“The Oyster Dredgers”
Original signed etching 1924 (Ed: no 64/75)
Size 18″x 12″ (image 10″x 7″)
This etching shows oyster dredgers in Buzzen (or Besom) Creek off the western edge of Mersea Island, close to where Briscoe lived and a so river that he knew well. In those days, the Colchester Oyster industry thrived.
Briscoe was a marine painter and etcher. He studied at The Slade School of Art and was elected to the Royal Soc of Painter-Etchers and Engravers (RE) in 1933 and the Royal Inst of Painters in Water Colours (RI) in 1934. He exhibited many times at the Royal Academy.
Briscoe pictures are often accepted as some of the best marine art of the last century. His powerful works reflect both his skill and understanding of his subject.
