Briscoe (1873-1943) was a marine painter and etcher. He studied at The Slade School of Art and was elected to the Royal Soc of Painter-Etchers and Engravers (RE) in 1933 and the Royal Inst of Painters in Water Colours (RI) in 1934. He exhibited many times at the Royal Academy.
Many of Briscoe’s etchings show sailing ships and their often at times of stress and physical activity. His pictures represent an valuable historical record of life aboard vessels in the last few years of sail’s dominance.
